Lost within hot wet forests, cut off the world by high cliffs and impenetrable jungle, a human tribe lives, and each of its members’ life is counted in Dreams, not in years. When the summer is almost over their hunters scour through the woods for a colony of insects they call peacock moths, their huge, bizarre chrysalises hanging on branches high above the ground and tingling softly. When the place is found, the whole tribe travels there and encamps close to it, setting sentinels and waiting patiently for the night of metamorphose. Once the process has started, people gather under the trees and lie down to watch it. One by one, the creatures get out of their shelters, their wings wrinkled and wet yet drying fast, being ready to fly in an hour - and that’s when the Dream is to begin! While hundreds of peacock moths are trying their first flight, the pollen covering their wide wings fills the air, sparkling, swirling in moonlight, covering leaves, and grass, and human skin in gold, and green, and blue, and people breathing the air get falling asleep. In their dreams, they become different persons in different times and places they had no chance to ever hear about, living the whole new life from its very beginning till its very end, learning, creating, destroying, making choices good or bad, feeling all specter of emotions available for human beings and thinking all kinds of thoughts - and the story they live through is never the same. The Dream takes just a few hours yet feels like dozens and dozens of years, even more real than reality itself, so most of the tribe’s members live from one Dream to another taking the period in reality for some easy rest filled with some easy tasks until their next lifetime experience.
